Accessibility Requirements
Laws and policies affecting educational institutions include:
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - The equal access requirement of the ADA requires IT system accessibility. Just as physical classroom locations must provide equal access for people with disabilities, similar accessibility enhancements are required for IT systems.
- Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act - Institutions receiving Federal funds from the Department of Education may be required to comply with Section 508, which mandates that all IT systems used, developed, procured, and maintained by covered organizations be accessible to people with disabilities.
- Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) - IDEA requires that educational institutions provide support services for students with disabilities.
